WISCON 42! "Doing Justice to the Archive: The Octavia E. Butler Papers"

  • WISCON 42, Concourse Hotel and Governor's Club 1 West Dayton Street Madison, WI, 53703 United States (map)

Five scholars (Shelley Streeby, Sami Schalk, Ayana Jamieson, Aimee Bahng, Cassandra Jones) who have worked extensively with the Octavia E. Butler Papers at the Huntington Library discuss Butler's archive as a time capsule for imagining social justice. First, each of us will talk briefly about a particular item in the archive and how it opens up questions about and possibilities for imagining social justice in our present and future. Next, we will discuss the potentialities and challenges involved in efforts to push the questions raised by Butler's archive into different spaces outside the confines of the Huntington Library through teaching and other world-making activities.
